Sweet and Sour Tomato Chutney

Chutney in general have no value of their own, but they work amazingly well at enhancing the taste of food they are consumed with. Sweet and Sour chutney goes beyond that. It has the capability to sideline your main course be considered a dish in itself because of its great taste, and also because it can be consumed in large quantities. Give it a try and you are certainly going to enjoy the fruits of your effort.


Tomatoes: 3, medium in size
Panch phoran (It is a mixture of methi, ajwain, saunf, sarson, and mangrail available in the Indian stores) – 3-4 pinches
Ginger paste – 1tsp
Roasted cumin powder (Zeera)- ½ tsp
Green chili – 1-2,  very finely chopped
Red chili powder as per taste
Sugar: 5-6 tsps approx.,quantity depends upon the level of sweetness you wish
Salt as per taste
Cooking oil


  • Cut tomato into big pieces.
  • Heat oil in a pan.
  • Add panch phoran and fry till it is brown.
  • Add green chilies and ginger paste. Stir fry for a minute.
  • Add tomatoes and cover the lid. Cook on medium flame. Add salt to fasten the process.
  • Add sugar when tomatoes are completely cooked.
  • Stir chutney till sugar completely dissolves.
  • Add roasted zeera powder and mix properly.
  • Add red chili powder if you want to make it more spicy.
  • Serve this with all kinds of stuffed parathas.
