Pav Bhaji


Potatoes – 2, medium sized, boiled and mashed
Chick peas -½ cup, boiled and coarsely mashed
Pav (Bread) roasted with ample amount of butter
Capsicum, chopped – 1, small in size
Green chillies- ½ tsp
Onions, chopped- ½ cup
Tomato – 1 big, finely chopped
Cabbage, chopped- -½ cup
Carrot, chopped – ¼ cup
Cauliflower- ¼ cup, small florets
Peas, boiled – ¼ cup
Cumin seeds (Zeera) – ½ tsp
Mustard seed (Rai) – ½ tsp
Ginger paste – 1 tbsp
Garlic paste – 1tbsp
Turmeric powder (Haldi) – 1 tsp
Pav bhaji masala – 4-5 tbsp approx. ( Available in Indian grocery stores)
Lime juice as per taste
Salt to taste


  • Heat butter in a pan. Add zeera and rai and let it sputter.
  • Add chopped onions till it is pink in color.
  • Add all remaining chopped vegetables except tomatoes.
  • Cook veggies well. You can add salt at this stage.
  • Add ginger and garlic paste and fry till is golden brown.
  • Add turmeric powder.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and cook till it completely softens.
  • Add pav bhaji masala. Fry for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add pre boiled and coarsely mashed chick peas and mix well.
  • Add pre boiled and  finely mashed potatoes.
  • Add little water to mix the contents properly.
  • Now cover the pan and let it simmer for 15- 20 minutes until it thickens.
  • Mash the bhaji a little with help of laddle.
  • Add lime juice.
  • Garnish the bhaji with chopped coriander leaves, remaining butter and serve hot with pav accompanied with remaining chopped onion and lemon wedges.
